ABSTRACT

It is known that there is a relationship between alcohol use and crime.

For this reason, during the 1990-2000 period, the blood alcohol levels of 2895 persons who came to the Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GMMA) Department of Emergency Medicine were determined in Department of Pharmaceutical Toxicology and they were evaluated relating with their age, sex and case type.

2820 of 2895 (97.4%) were male and 75 of 2895 (2.6%) were female. Blood alcohol levels were above 50 mg/dL in 1462 (50%) persons (1426 (97.5%) male, 36 (2.5%) female). 910 (62.3%) of 1781 persons aged between 15-22, 193 (13.2%) of 373 persons aged between 23-30,181 (12.3%) of 384 aged between 31-40 and 178 (12.2%) of 357 aged 41+ were alcoholic. From view of the case type, 285 (19.5%) of 870 traffic accident, 546 (37.4%) of 997 forensic case and 631 (43.1%) of 1028 control case were alcoholic.

As a result, it was determined that most of the persons who were included for alcohol analysis were male at GMMA. It was found that the number of people who used alcohol was higher in 15-22 age group than the other groups. It was found that the number of people who used alcohol was higher in control case than the other case types.
