ABSTRACT

Evidence-based nursing applications are an important factor in increasing the quality of care. However, studies have shown that nurses do not use research results adequately and they do not have adequate information about evidencebased nursing. The aim of this study was to carry out a validity and reliability study of the "Barriers Scale" used to determine the barriers and facilitating factors related to applying the results of nursing studies. The study was carried out with a total of 631 nurses from 9 hospitals belonging to two different institutions in Ankara between September 1 and 30, 2004. Of all the nurses, 88.7% did not participate in any study and 70.0% did not participate in any scientific activity before. The general internal consistency Cronbachα coefficient of the scale was 0.87 and the scale was accepted as reliable. The most important barriers to the nurses' use of study results were not seeing enough authority in themselves to change current applications, not having enough time to read studies and not having adequate resources for nursing applications.
