ABSTRACT
The investigation of the patients regarding the presence of systemic diseases in dental practice is important with respect to taking the necessary precautions related to general health status of patients and preventing the complications before they occur. In this study it was aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of systemic diseases and the most prevalent systemic diseases in adult patients admitting to our oral and maxillofacial surgery outpatient clinic. Study group included a total of 1002 patients, 537 females and 465 males aged between 18 to 81 years admitting to outpatient clinic of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Gulhane Military Medical Academy for conservative care. Medical history of the patients was obtained by self-reported anamnestical questionnaires and interviews, and the distribution and prevalence of systemic diseases were determined. In 23.80% and 12.70% of the study group, 1 and more than one systemic diseases were detected, respectively, whereas no diseases were detected in 63.50% of the study group. The most prevalent disease in the study group was cardiovascular pathologies (18.56%), and the second most common disease was endocrinologic diseases (8.28%). In conclusion, prevention of complications by performing optimal treatments after obtaining a detailed medical history from the patient is extremely important.
