ABSTRACT

Violence against nurses in emergency departments has recently increased. The purpose of this research was to determine the approaches and the suggestions of the nurses to the violence in emergency service in order to contribute to increasing nursing qualities against violence in emergency service. It was a descriptive study. The data were collected through a questionnaire prepared to ask the nurses about their suggestions to approaching to violence which they were exposed to by four cases in emergency service. Frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data. According to the results, nurses mostly used these strategies: "Carrying out necessary professional practices" ( 47.81 %), "Explaining about the situation to the family or relatives of the patient" (13.28 %), "Counseling other members of health care team and directing the patient to other members of the health team" ( 11.38 %), and "Managers should solve the problems by listening to patients and nurses seperately" (29.34 %), "Adequate number and quality of personnel should be provided in the emergency departments" (18.48 %), "Necessary legal and administrative measures should be taken against violent patients" (11.96 %) were recommended by the nurses to solve violent cases. Suggestions were offered to minimize the violent cases and contribute to improving the quality of nursing services.
