ABSTRACT

Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis is a rare hereditary condition characterized by progressive enlargement of the gingiva caused by increase in submucosal connective tissue elements. It may grow slowly over the years without any visible reason until covering teeth completely or partially. In this paper diagnosis, histopathological features and treatment of the case of idiopathic gingival fibromatosis are presented. There are gingival enlargement involving the maxillary palatal surface, cross bite, generalized malpositioning of teeth, and difficulty in speech and mastication in the case presented. The diagnosis of idiopathic gingival fibromatosis was approved by the histopathological examination. Palatinal hyperplastic submucosal connective tissue was excised with conventional surgical techniques under local anesthesia as the treatment.
