ABSTRACT

One of the major cause of deaths in Turkey arise from myocardial infarction and the leading cause of myocardial infarction is atherosclerosis, which narrows the coronary vessel lumen brings about the acute coronary syndromes. We investigated the relationship between serum fibrinogen level and the genesis risk of coronary events among 10 year coronary high risk score patients and the fibrinogen response to recovery of adjustable coronary risks and utilisation of fibrinogen level for atherosclerosis treatment and follow up.

Plasma fibrinogen level showed a positive statistical correlation with coronary events and increased level was detected regarding with smoking and age (p< 0.001).

Plasma fibrinogen level showed a good statistical correlation with abatement of coronary disease risk factors, quitting smoking, loosing weight, regular exercise and low cholesterol diet (p< 0.05).

Body mass index, triglyceride, high density cholesterol correlated significantly with fibrinogen level but no correlation was detected between hypertension, total cholesterol and low density cholesterol levels in terms of pretreatment and one year follow up (p<0.05).

The efficient atherosclerosis treatment follow up can be made with plasma fibrinogen level during the therapy.

The affection of fibrinogen with atherosclerotic risk factors, we concluded to use it as a follow up marker rather than using it as a marker of atherosclerosis progression. More longitudinal studies with large enough sample size will be needed.
