ABSTRACT
In this study it was aimed to investigate the relations between nutritional behavior and physical activity level, and body mass index groups. Data were collected via face to face interviews using a questionnaire, and body weight and height measurements were made from 319 students chosen by random sampling among the three schools in Kocaeli. Results of the study showed that 5.6%, 14.7% and 4.1% of the students were underweight, overweight and obese, respectively. Being overweight and obese were more common in boys than in girls. There was a significant correlation between gender and the groups of body mass index. Of all the adolescents, 79% and 6.6% were physically inactive and active, respectively. There was a significant correlation between the level of physical activity and groups of body mass index. Of all the adolescents, 15.4% consumed fast food everyday, whereas 53% consumed it a few times a week. Daily fruit and vegetable consumptions were 1.8 and 1.5 servings, respectively. The mean durations of time spent on watching television and computer were 2.3 and 1.9 hours, respectively. In our particular experience, programs about healthy nutritional behavior and active living may be recommended to be integrated into school curricula.
