Evaluation of sport habits and sport injuries in medical students

This study was performed to assess the sport habits of and sport injuries in medical students. This descriptive study was conducted during May and July 2010. The sociodemographic characteristics, and data towards determining sport habits and injuries of the participants were collected by a questionnaire which was formed by the investigators. It was determined that 71.8% of the participants were doing sports, 39.6% of them had sport injuries related with the sport activity which they were interested in, and the sport branch most commonly related with injury was football (27.0%). The frequencies of traumas reported by the participants were blunt trauma and soft tissue trauma (17.8%), connective tissue injuries and tear (12.6%), and fracture and dislocation (8.6%). It was determined that the most common causes of sport injuries were inadequate cool down and overload, which were of individual reasons. When we considered that most persons in our study group were not active in sports and all were health care personnel, the frequency of sport injuries reported is not rare. Taking personal protective measures is the basic approach to prevent from the probable sport injuries.
