OBJECTIVE:

We aim to present the effects of oral preparats which are given to the women who have unprotected, unreliable and unwilling intercourse to help them prevent pregnancy.

INSTITUTION:

GATA Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department

METHODS:

In the period between March 2000 and March 2003, 83 women who came to polyclinic of GATA Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department were given oral contraceptives. The ages of the patients changed from 18 year to 37 years. 23 patients (%27.7) were under 20 years , 42 patients (%50.6) were between 20-24 years, 12 patients (%14.4) were between 25-29 years and 6 patients (%7.2) were over 30 years of age.The patients were given 50 mg Ethinyl estradiol +250 mg Levonorgestrel (ovral) and if this could not be found they were given 30 mg ethinyl estradiol + 150 mg Levonorgestrel (loovral). And the women who have intercourse with more than one partners were given an additional drug: Doxycycline.

RESULTS:

All of the 83 patients did not have pregnancy. The result was successful. But, as the side effects of the used drugs nausea and vomiting were observed in 33 ( 40.0 %) and 18 ( 12.0 % ) of the patients respectively.

CONCLUSIONS:

Emergency contraception methods has an important role in our country because modern contraceptıon methods are not been used in a satisfying ratio. Emergency contraception method is an easy and effective method, but it doesn't have a protecting effect against sexually transmitted diseases. We need to take an additional precaution for that. To prevent the side effects we suggest using antiemetics. Key
