Background:

Condyloma Acuminata is a venereal disease usually transmitted with sexual contact which is characterized with clinical and subclinical anogenital lesions caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Many treatment methods have been described which can be separated into topical, immunotherapeutic, and surgical techniques.

Patients and Methods:

Fifty patients with diagnosis of condylomata acuminata of the anogenital region, who were admitted to Surgical and Dermatological Clinics of Gulhane Military Medical Academy between 1990-2003, were retrospectively evaluated regarding to treatment modalities. Patients were treated with medical and surgical modalities regarding to locations and size of the lesions, some patients in medical group were additionally treated with cauterization.

Results:

There were 45 males and 5 females and mean patient age was 29.1 ± 8.8 in medical group and 30.0 ± 9.4 in surgical group. Mean follow up period was 20.0 ± 10.7 mounts in medical patients and 24.0 ± 15.0 mounts in surgical patients. Recurrence rate during follow up period was 22% (six patients) in medical groups whereas there was no recurrences in surgical patients.

Conclusion:

The best choice of treatment for a given patient depends on the extent and location of disease and the preferences of the clinician and the patient. Treatment modalities with topical agents can clear the small lesions in most of the patients with reasonable recurrence rates. Surgical approach is the effective therapy for wide lesions.
