It is seen that cancer incidence and morbidity in the world is increasing. Cancer patients are living longer than in the past because of the developing in medicine and techonology. Palliative care is the active total care of patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Control of pain, of other symptoms, and of psychological, social, and spiritual problems is paramount. The goal of palliative care is the achievement of the best quality of life for patients and their families.

An effective palliative care focuses on the patient and the family and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Doctors, nurses, social worker and religious functionaries may play a role in palliative care. A nurse involved in a palliative care team should should be able to make a comprehensive evaluation of patients and their families’ needs. She should have effective communication skills,listen to them carefully, respect patients and their families’ knowledge and decisions. The nurse provide support and care for all family members of a patient. The nurse in a special palliative care team should be aware of their abilities and limitations. She should always update their knowledge and skills.
